Project objective

The ReBioClim project aims to promote biodiversity, climate change adaptation and improve the quality of life in cities by using natural practices to revitalise urban streams. Through the project's participatory and multi-stakeholder approach, awareness and knowledge of the importance of biodiversity and ecosystem services in cities should be raised and generally acceptable urban river restoration measures should be identified. In order to address the above challenges and to improve the planning, implementation and management of these so-called nature-based solutions (NbS), an integrated analysis of the ecology, stakeholder interests, institutional frameworks, social considerations and urban space requirements will be carried out within the project.

The ReBioClim project has two phases focusing on the implementation of nature-based solutions for the revitalisation of urban flows. In the first theoretical phase, a group of experts will develop a handbook of preferred best practices with practical guidelines for stream restoration that enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services in cities. The handbook will be based on practical suggestions for stream revitalisation in Dresden (DE), Jablonec nad Nisou (CZ), Poznan (PL) and Senica (SK). It will also address problems of institutional procedures in the countries involved, flood protection issues, property rights, necessary consents and permits, and obstacles arising from the interests of stakeholder groups. The handbook will be addressed to practitioners, city and municipal staff and urban planning decision-makers. The second part of the project provides examples of practical solutions that will be implemented on parts of rivers in Dresden and Senica.

In Senica, a model revitalisation of the Teplice River is planned for a length of about 150 m in the central part of the city park. Its implementation should take place in 2026. The revitalisation proposal will be developed under the expert auspices of the Department of Landscape Water Management of the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava.
